Saint George's Reef Light, California

Over the centuries this notorious reef has been the demise of numerous ships, including the slide-wheeler “Brother Jonathan” in 1865, a sinking that claimed more than two hundred lives. These dangerous waters led to the construction of the Saint George’s Reef Light in 1892. It remains the most costly lighthouse in the United States and is located six miles off shore near Crescent City, California.
