The Rock of Ages Lighthouse, Lake Superior

Built in 1908 on an open-water caisson atop a notoriously dangerous shoal, the Rock of Ages Lighthouse was one of the most isolated manned light stations in America. The lighthouse was automated in 1978, much to the relief to the lonely keepers. This commemorative painting was executed on heavyweight watercolor board with loose strokes, a natural feel and dramatic color that doesn't get any cleaner. The piece is magnificently framed with a white fillet, supporting a triple matt coordinated to the color scheme of the water. The presentation is held in place by a light, natural wood frame rubbed down with a slate-blue wash.
