Mark Smollin paints American sports with a contemporary sense of design, dramtic lighting, passionate color and a flair for competitive determination of atheletes as they move throught time and space.

He likes working on large scale pieces, caressing them with various tools, beginning with broad loose strokes, contrasting simple spaces with areas that are complex and finished with detailed rendering, Canvas is the preferred medium because it is so malleable. All the paintings in this series began with a graphite value drawing for design and placement. Transparent washes of acrylic were added and then more opaque colors applied. Some details were applied with colored pencil and the finished work sealed with several clear coats of matte varnish.

Mark hails from Westport Connecicut where he was inspired by two creative parents and notable local artists who were friends of the family. He now makes his home in Southern California, where he graduated from Art Center College of Design as an illustration major. His paintings have supported the advertising industry, book publishers, motion picture studios, musical talents and been reproduced in national publications.
